Inspired by a photograph by my friend Annette Cozi, taken during the Radio Waves Music Festival in Grand Marais, Minnesota, on September 7, 2025, just before the autumn equinox.

I was drawn to the deep blues and teals, the way the moon sits behind the clouds, and the scene’s slightly eerie, quiet feeling.

Like many of my pieces, a dark tree line anchors the scene. The pines are softened and slightly blurred, blending into the sky, while the light behind them shifts through blues, greens, and taupes.

There is a lot of depth and texture in the clouds and trees, as well as various shades of blue, green, and grey behind the trees for a backlit effect.

This time of year feels like a pause. The days are getting shorter, but the light doesn’t disappear all at once—it lingers and softens. That sense of things slowing down is what I wanted to capture.
