Inspired by a photo I took while driving along the Gunflint Trail towards Grand Marais. As I neared the iconic Gunflint Pines, the sun was just about to rise above the horizon, right over the crest of the road. I always feel a sense of sadness when leaving the Trail, and I often say, “Goodbye, beautiful pines,” as I pass these trees. However, this time, I also felt hope in the sunrise, and the words “Until next time” seemed more fitting.
Like many of my works, the bright sky sharply contrasts with the shadowed tree line. The sun behind the trees creates darker hues closer to the viewer. Lighter shades are used for the background trees, which reflect the sunlight, and each layer of trees becomes darker as it builds up. The unique techniques I use, including different needle types and layering shades of gray, brown, and black, bring each tree species to life in a way I hope is both striking and realistic.
