Needle felting using wool, cotton, and silk fibers

2024
14″ x 18″ (felt on canvas)
15.75″ x 19.75″ x 1.625″ (floating frame)
Status: Split Rock Lighthouse Exhibit, October 1 – November 10, 2024

Inspired by a night sky view of Venus, Jupiter, and a Waxing Crescent Moon at the end of nautical twilight early in the evening of February 21, 2023, in the Superior National Forest. They appeared even closer the following evening, separated by only eight degrees. An almost complete convergence of Venus and Jupiter occurred on March 1-2, 2023, not to be repeated until 2039.

Like many of my pieces, the sky starkly contrasts a shadowed Northwoods treeline. Each tree species is created using different needles, techniques, and shades of black at various depths.
