This piece was based on a photo my client took after he and his partner and friends had finished a rather grueling portage while on their first multi-day trip into the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in Northeastern Minnesota. While I’m uncertain of the exact location of the view, it clearly shows evidence of fire activity with only the trunks and some branches remaining of the tall white pines for more than half of the view.

The waters must have been rather calm that day based on the glass-like reflection of the trees and shoreline. I love the colors cast by the light gray sky and the subtle clouds which draw your eye to the varying layers of green in the conifers and the early autumn golds in the hardwoods. My client wanted a canoe added to the picture, which you can see on the left shoreline. I also included two small green Duluth Packs inside the canoe!

This is one of my larger pieces to date and I sourced a custom walnut floating frame to compliment the tree trunks and shoreline.
