This piece is inspired by a photograph taken just after sunset on Seagull Lake near the end of Minnesota’s Gunflint Trail. Blue hour is that fleeting transition between day and night when the landscape softens, colors deepen, and the wilderness seems to pause before darkness settles in.

To recreate that quiet atmosphere, I first wet felted the background before gradually building the scene with thousands of individually placed wool fibers. The finished felt is mounted on a black-painted canvas, creating depth while allowing the luminous blues to glow from within.

The backside of the piece offers an interesting view of the colored fibers as they were pushed through the canvas. Leaving the back of the piece exposed allows the wool fibers to breathe and minimizes moisture buildup.

Wire hanging hardware is attached. Information about the piece, care instructions for fiber art, and a copy of the original reference photo are tucked into the back in a custom folio.
