Needle felting using natural wool fibers

2025
8″ x 6″ x 1 ⅜” (felt on canvas)
Status: SOLD

One of three Aurora pieces I created for the North Shore Artists League 6th Annual Member Show that ran July 18 to August 10, 2025, at the Johnson Heritage Post Gallery in Grand Marais, MN.

The show’s theme was Echoes of Wilderness, Water & Wonder. These scenes are rich in color, and I’ve been able to use a lot of leftover blends from previous projects—always a bonus. There’s something ethereal and soothing about how auroras blend into deep, dark, moody skies. I love how the bright greens blend through turquoise and blue tints into the purple bands.

While I’ve felted into primed cotton canvas before, I chose to remove the canvas from the frame in order to felt all the way around the edges. Not having a flat surface and the stiff nature of the primed canvas were challenging, but I only bent a few needles along the way.
