“Hygge: the Warmth of Winter”, North Shore Artist League Member Exhibit

Selected Artwork: ‘Almost Home,’ ‘Full Moon Winter Halo,’ ‘Coming Off the Ice’

Where: Johnson Heritage Post Art Gallery, Grand Marais, MN
Exhibit: “Hygge: the Warmth of Winter”
Dates: February 2024

Three of my pieces were included in this exhibit. I loved how the team displayed groupings of the pieces in themes of pink and purple hues, the night sky, fall colors, birds, winter scenes, and more.

Hygge (H(Y)oo-ga), as described by North Shore Artists League‘s call for art for this exhibit, is derived from the Scandinavian “to hug”; we can think of hygge as embracing winter in a pleasant, cozy and highly valued everyday experience of safety, equality, personal wholeness and a spontaneous social flow.

‘Almost Home’ – I captured this picture of the sunset glowing beneath a cloud front as I was nearing home in February 2023. The idea of being almost home, the glow from the sun, and a warm fire in a cozy cabin always calms my soul.

‘Full Moon Winter Halo’ – This piece was inspired by a full moon photo I took on March 7, 2023, shrouded in a gorgeous halo and light clouds. There’s something about the night sky in winter – so much more ethereal and soothing to my spirit. (Fun fact: Did you know March’s full moon is called The Worm Moon? Something about how earthworms typically begin to appear in March as the soil warms up, which is usually not the case in Northern MN!)

‘Coming Off the Ice’ – The reference photo behind this piece is my husband pulling a sled of gear after a day of ice fishing in January 2023. We usually stay on the ice until or shortly after dusk, and the sunsets or night skies never disappoint! But no matter how great the day has been, I always look forward to coming off the ice, knowing a warm home and quiet evening await.
